A song for someone who passed away

Not a hymn and not a hit somebody else wrote. A song about them: their name in the chorus, the garden and the dogs and the bad jokes in the verses, sung the way they would have liked it.

A memorial song is an original song written about one person who has died, from the memories the people who loved them write down: their name, what they did, what they were like, what they would want the family to hear now. It can be played at the service, at the celebration of life, or at home when the house goes quiet. At BeatJar you type the story, read the lyrics we write from it, hear the song, and pay only if it sounds like them.

The songs on this page were made for a mother of six who kept her door open, a brother four years gone, a grandmother and her dog, a dad and the milkshakes on the drive home from work. Every one was written from a few sentences a family typed, most of them in the first weeks after the loss.

People tell us the same thing afterwards: the service had readings and flowers and a slideshow, and the song was the part where everyone cried at once. Play one first, then decide whether you want to write theirs.

An acoustic song for a dad and the milkshake dates

Acoustic · Calm · Duet

  1. 1What they typed into the form

Dad I miss you and our talks. The milkshake dates in the car on the way home from work are what I’ll always be grateful for. I miss your smile and your hugs. I miss seeing you singing and dancing. I know you’re safe in heaven, watching over me.
  2. 2The lyrics we wrote from it

Dad, I still hear your voice, it whispers in my ear It's in those quiet moments, when I wish you were near We'd drive home from work, milkshakes in our hands Those simple little dates, I truly understand I miss your gentle smile, and how you'd hold me tight The way you'd sing and dance, brought everything to light Though you're watching over, from a starry sky above Your love remains my guide, your spirit I still love Oh, Dad, I miss you every day In every little thing, in every way

Why a song, when there are already flowers and photographs

Flowers say that people came. A photograph shows what they looked like. Neither says what they were like: that she introduced you to someone you had met fifteen times, that he lost an arm and kept curling, that the milkshakes on the drive home were the best part of the day. A song holds those things, with their name on them, in a form the family can play at the service and then keep playing on the birthdays and anniversaries that keep coming round.

Grief research supports keeping that connection rather than severing it. Stroebe and Schut's review in Death Studies (2005) found that the old advice to "let go" is not what the evidence shows; an ongoing bond with the person who died is common and, for many people, healthy. Norton and Gino (2014) found that people who performed a ritual after a loss reported less grief afterwards, and Iliya's small pilot study (2015) of music therapy for bereaved adults, which included singing to the person who died, saw grief symptoms fall further than with standard care alone. The papers are listed at the bottom of the page.

For the service

Played after the eulogy, or over the slideshow. Three minutes with their name in it, in the music they loved.

For the family, after

For the weeks when the casseroles stop and the house is quiet. A song you can play alone in the car.

For a friend who lost someone

When you do not know what to say. Write down what you know about the person they lost and let the song say it.

For a parent

From the children, together. What she carried, what he built, what they would want the family to do now.

For the birthday that still comes

The first birthday after, or the tenth. A song to play instead of the silence.

For the grandkids who never met them

So the next generation knows the name, the garden, the jokes, in a form they will actually play.

What to put in the story

You do not need to write well, and you do not need to write much. Give us their name and what people called them, one or two things they loved, one thing they always did, and, if you can, what they would want the family to hear now. Here are three stories from real memorial orders, exactly as the families typed them. Each became a song you can play on this page.

A mother of six, from her children

Joyce passed away 05/23/2026. She was the strength of her family. She was the oldest of 5 and mother to 6. She lost her oldest daughter all her siblings 2 grandchildren and many more prior to her passing. Her home was always open to anyone. She judged no one loved deeply and would give anything she had to you if she could. She loved to gamble, party laugh but most of all she loved her family. She feared leaving her remaining 5 children behind. She would want them to know that she is ok and would want them to come together as one set differences aside love each other and make good choices. She was a beautiful mom, grandma great grandma and great great grandma aunt and friend. She is reunited with her loved ones that she lost. She loved music her dogs and a good time. She would feed you love you and make sure you knew you were always welcome. She would always introduce you to someone you met 15 times but each time was like the first time always made us laugh.

A dad, from his daughter

Dad I miss you and our talks. The milkshake dates in the car on the way home from work are what I'll always be grateful for. I miss your smile and your hugs. I miss seeing you singing and dancing. I know you're safe in heaven, watching over me.

A father and grandfather, for the service

about he loved to fish he loved the game of curling he loved the Blue Jays and I made flower arrangements for those so would be appropriate. He lost his arm and still curled. He loved his grandchildren and children. He loved his garden many many cucumbers for us to pickle, especially his wife Julie his name was Ted his children are Michael Leanne, Al Lynn, and Laurie

One is a page, one is four lines, one is a list with no punctuation. All three name the person, all three have one detail that belongs only to them, and all three became songs the family played. The cucumbers made it into the chorus.

Writing it when you are the one grieving

Most memorial stories arrive in the first two weeks, often written at night, often by the person who has been organising everything else. A few things that help:

  • Write it the way you would tell a friend who never met them. Facts and habits, not adjectives. "She fed everyone" beats "she was generous".
  • Include the thing that made people laugh. The songs families play most are the ones with the joke in them.
  • Say what they loved: the team, the music, the dog by name. It tells us which sound to use and it gives the song its details.
  • If they had a message for the family, put it in. Joyce wanted her five children to set their differences aside; that became the bridge.
  • You can send it to one family member first. The preview is easy to share, and the lyrics can be changed before anyone pays.

How families use the song

At the service, most play it after the eulogy or over the photo slideshow; three minutes is about the length of one. Some print the lyrics in the order of service. Afterwards it goes on phones, gets sent to the relatives who could not travel, and gets played on the birthday and the anniversary, which is the part nobody plans for and everybody does.

If the service is soon, you choose the delivery window at checkout. Have the story ready first; the song arrives in the window you pick, and the lyrics are yours to read before then.

Genres and styles for memorial songs

You choose the genre, the feel and the voice on the order form, and you can change any of them after hearing the preview. This is what people chose for memorial songs, and the full menu.

Everything you can choose

Genres
Country, R&B, Soft Rock, Acoustic, Rock, Pop, Gospel, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Metal, Electronic
Feel
Romantic, Emotional, Soulful, Upbeat, Inspiring, Playful, Nostalgic, Celebratory, Fun, Spiritual, Calm, Lullaby
Voice
Female, Male, Duet

For a memorial song, country or acoustic with an emotional feel is the usual choice, and a single voice rather than a duet. Pick the genre they listened to: a Charlie Pride fan gets a country song, not a ballad. The sound they loved is part of the tribute.

My mom and dad are in heaven now. But, this is the closest I’ll ever get to them knowing how I feel. My siblings all cried when they heard it.

I was unsure that a song could be written that could genuinely convey the emotions I wanted too and not song like a generic shallow song. I could be more wrong. Because the song also involved the lost of my little girl to cancer and the love that is help me through this painful time it was important that I find the right words to say I love you with a song that told our story. Our song is beautiful painful and true. I had options for the styles and could preview the song lyrics in advance. I could even edit the lyrics after the song download was completed.

After entering my story info, I immediately received the lyrics to an amazing song with the opportunity to purchase. I completed the purchase and within minutes the song was available to download. I wanted to make a small change and within minutes again, I received a message from Erik that the changes were completed. He was so kind and his words were filled with compassion. My beautiful daughter passed and the song was to keep her kindness and memory alive. It was absolutely perfect and I am grateful for the product and kindness he has shown. I would definitely recommend and I will purchase again in the future.

We used this song at Judys funeral . My brother ( John ) loved it and now has the words framed in his wife's favorite frame. This song made John extremely emotional and happy. Thank you for a great job. The process was very easy to do. The sound quality was great as well.

I was able to copy the song onto an editing software and created a movie with the song. My mom loved it. My dad died a year and a half ago and we miss him terribly. The song was emotional but so sweet too. Adding videos to it made it that much more special. Thank you!

Oh my God, I went beatjar to make a song for my aunt Brenda that had passed away for her birthday. That’s coming in August. They did amazing. I would recommend this 100% to everyone they are priced amazingly compared to the other ones I have tried. Thank you so much. The song literally made me cry but in a good way and I cannot wait to put this song on for my aunt’s birthday in August 4.

They initially were very upfront about the cost which I struggled to find with other companies. The price was very reasonable and it was exactly as they had stated. You have options on other additions, but it was choice and no pressure. The initial song was excellent. It was a memorial song and it captured what I was trying to say so well. The artist and music were just perfect. It just needed a little tweak with the ending and the changes were easy to make and the team took me through each step. I don’t often do reviews but this company certainly deserves a great one.

Absolutely should do. I made 2 songs 1 for my boyfriend who truly is our world and 2 for my mom who just lost her mom this month. The reactions and emotions were more than anything they could unwrap. I highly suggest this as a gift.

Questions people ask about memorial songs

Is it appropriate to play at a funeral or celebration of life?
Families do, usually after the eulogy or over the slideshow. It is an original song about the person, in the style they liked, so it fits the service the way a reading would. Ask the officiant or funeral director about timing and a speaker.
What if I cannot bring myself to write much?
Four lines is enough. One of the songs on this page came from a daughter who wrote five sentences about milkshake dates with her dad. Their name, one thing they loved, one thing they always did. We write the rest, and you read it before anything is paid.
Can it be from the whole family?
Yes. Say who is writing and who they are to the person. Songs from several children usually name each of them in a verse or the bridge, the way Ted's song names Michael, Leanne, Al Lynn and Laurie.
Can I hear it before I pay?
Yes. You read the full lyrics and hear the song before paying anything. If a line is wrong, change it. If it does not sound like them, walk away and it costs nothing.
The service is in three days. Is that enough time?
Yes. You choose the delivery window at checkout, and the shortest is about an hour. Have the story ready, and give yourself time to listen once alone before you play it for everyone.
Can it be about a pet?
Yes. Many of the stories we receive are about a dog, and the song treats the loss the way the family does. Say their name and what they did every day.
What does it cost?
From US$37.95. The price depends only on how fast you want it delivered, and you see it before you pay.
