Why a song is the Christmas gift that gets played every year

In the National Retail Federation's October survey (2025), Americans planned to spend about $890 each on the 2025 holidays, most of it on gifts for family and friends, and the gift most people said they wanted was a gift card. That is not a cynical answer; it is what you say when nothing on the list is about you. A song is about them: the year they had, the house they bought, the thing the grandkids call them. It costs a fraction of the average gift budget and it is the only present that gets played again next December.

The research points the same way. According to Sezer, Norton, Gino and Vohs (2016), the families who enjoy the holidays most are the ones with rituals of their own, because a shared ritual pulls everyone into the moment and makes them feel closer; a song the family plays together every December is exactly that kind of ritual. And as Janata (2009) documented, familiar music is wired into the part of the brain that holds our memories, which is why a Christmas song with their name in it becomes part of the tradition rather than part of the pile. Partner, baby due on Christmas Day

Greg and I just celebrated our one year anniversary on December 14. He moved from his home town to live with my daughter Peyton and I three months of being together. We have made it thru the hardest of times and God had us face the toughest of times together but he also pulled us through. We found out we were pregnant in April 2024 and I am due Christmas Day with our son. He's stepped up to be a dad for Peyton and she loves him as much as I do. We moved into our own house in August, bought a car and we are living paycheck to paycheck until I finish grad school in a year.
