The people who say it are almost always the same people: the ones who provide, fix, host and drive, and who stopped keeping a list for themselves years ago. Ask them what they want and you get "nothing, just come for dinner". They mean it. Nothing on the shelf is missing.
What is missing is something they will never ask for: being told, specifically, that somebody saw all of it. The research on gift-giving points the same way. Gino and Flynn (2011) found that people are most grateful for gifts they actually asked for, and that givers are bad at guessing this even when they are told outright. And Galak, Givi and Williams (2016) found that givers chase the wow of the moment while recipients care more about what lasts. So the answer to "nothing" is not a cleverer object. It is attention with a shape.

What do they always say?
The line at the door, the thing they shout at the television. It goes in the chorus.
What is the story you tell about them at parties?
The karaoke, the elk hunt, the time they drove four hours because you sounded off on the phone.
