What a song can say to a best friend that a birthday text cannot

The oldest friendships run on the assumption that the other person knows. They probably do. They have still never heard it said out loud, with their name on it, in three verses that cover the decades. A song does that, and because there are so few songs about friendship, it lands harder than the same gesture would for a partner.

The research points the same way. Dunbar (2018) found that friendship is one of the strongest influences we have on our health, wellbeing and happiness, and Holt-Lunstad, Smith and Layton (2010) found that people with stronger social ties are markedly more likely to live longer. I really thought it was going to be a scam and a terrible song that ended up coming out of the whole process but I literally cried when I heard it for the first time.
