Why a song beats the roses

The problem with Valentine's Day is that the gifts are interchangeable. The roses, the chocolates and the card could have gone to anyone. A song cannot: it has the trolley stop on 41st Street in it, the puppy named Gunner, the little brick house at Coopermill. It says what the two of you have, in the music you play, with their name on it, and it gets played on the drive to work for years.

The research says the same thing in drier words. Floyd, van Raalte and Hesse (2026) found that how much affection a partner receives predicts their own satisfaction with the relationship. According to Algoe, Gable and Maisel (2010), small, specific expressions of appreciation between partners predict more connection the next day, for both of them. And as Chan and Mogilner (2017) documented, gifts that are lived through do more for a relationship than gifts that are owned. The papers are listed at the bottom of the page.
