Story, lyrics and the songThe three things an anniversary card should say
An anniversary is the one day a year that is about the two of you as a pair, so the card has one job: prove you have been paying attention. The lines that do that are not the romantic ones. They are the specific ones. The shape that works, whether it is your first anniversary or your parents' fortieth:
-
1
Where it started
A date, a place, a detail.
The bar with the broken jukebox. Your dad's driveway in the rain.
-
2
What you know now that you did not then
One thing about them, or about the two of you, that only time could teach you.
I did not know what patience looked like until I watched you use it on me for a decade.
-
3
What you want next
Not "forever". Something you can picture.
Another twenty years of you falling asleep during the movie.
Write those three sentences and you have a card that could not have been written for anyone else. Everything below is that shape, filled in. Each one has a copy button; change the detail before you write it down.
Anniversary messages for your wife
-
Twelve years ago I married the smartest person in the room. I have been trying to catch up ever since. Happy anniversary.
-
You still laugh at the same three jokes I have. That, more than anything, is why this works. Happy anniversary, love.
-
I did not know what patience looked like until I watched you use it on me for a decade. Thank you. Happy anniversary.
-
Happy anniversary. I would pick you again in the same bar, on the same bad night, with the same broken jukebox.
-
Every version of me since the wedding has been better than the one before, and every one of them is your doing.
-
Fifteen years, two kids, one house, and I still look for you first when I walk into a room. Happy anniversary.
Anniversary messages for your husband
-
Happy anniversary to the man who fixes things I did not know were broken and never mentions it. I notice. I always notice.
-
You have never once made me feel like I was too much. Eight years of that is worth more than any gift. Happy anniversary.
-
I married you for the way you talk to your mother. I stayed for the way you talk to our kids. Happy anniversary.
-
Ten years ago you said you would figure it out. You always have. Happy anniversary, and thank you for figuring it out again this year.
-
Happy anniversary. Nobody else would have put up with the year we just had. Nobody else would have made it feel like a team.
-
The best decision I ever made was saying yes in your dad's driveway in the rain. Happy anniversary, love.
Longer messages when there is room
After a hard year
Happy anniversary. This is not the year we would have chosen, and I do not want a card that pretends otherwise. What I want to say is that I watched you carry it, and you never once let go of my hand while you did. Whatever comes next, I know how you handle the worst of it now, and I would not want anyone else beside me for it.
When you are the one who does not say it
I am not good at this, which you know, because you have been married to me for eleven years. So, for the record: you are the best thing that has happened to me, and the fact that I do not say it out loud does not mean I do not think it most days. Happy anniversary. I am going to try to say it more.
Apart on the day
Happy anniversary from three time zones away. I hate that I am not there. I also know that the reason we can do this at all is that we are the kind of pair that can. Save me a slice of whatever you order tonight. Six weeks and I am home.

Milestone anniversaries
The bigger the number, the more the card should look at the whole arc rather than the single year.
One year in, and the thing I did not expect is how ordinary it feels, in the best way. Coffee, the dog, your side of the bed. I would take another sixty of these.
Five years, one apartment, one house, one very bad vacation in Portugal. We are still here and still laughing about Portugal. Happy anniversary.
Ten years ago I promised things I did not fully understand. I understand them now. I would promise them all again, with the small print this time. Happy anniversary.
Twenty-five years. We have raised two people, buried two parents, and rebuilt one kitchen, and you are still the person I want to tell things to first. Happy silver anniversary.
Forty years. Everyone at the table on Sunday exists because of the two of you. That is not a small thing. Happy anniversary, Mom and Dad.
Fifty years. You showed all of us what it looks like to stay: not the easy staying, the real kind. Happy golden anniversary. We are all here because you two kept choosing each other.
Anniversary messages for your parents
Cards to parents go wrong when they get grand. "You are relationship goals" is a caption, not a card. Say what you saw.
-
Happy anniversary. I grew up watching Dad bring you tea every morning and you pretending not to notice. I noticed. It is why I knew what to look for.
-
Thirty-eight years and you still argue about the route to the coast. Do not ever stop. Happy anniversary, you two.
-
Happy anniversary, Mom and Dad. Everything I know about staying, I learned from watching you two do it through the years that were not easy.
-
To the couple who made a house feel like a place you wanted to come back to: happy anniversary. That was harder than you made it look.
For friends or another couple
-
Happy anniversary to the two people whose wedding was the best day out of my twenties. Still the benchmark.
-
Twenty years and you still finish each other's stories, usually wrong. Happy anniversary to both of you.
-
Happy anniversary. The two of you make it look like something worth doing. Thank you for that.
Funny anniversary card messages
Funny works when the joke is about something true between you. A generic "ball and chain" line is a generic card.
-
Happy anniversary. Nine years and you have still never once loaded the dishwasher correctly. I would not change a thing. Well, one thing.
-
Happy anniversary to my favorite person to be stuck in traffic with.
-
Seven years of you stealing the blanket. I have made my peace with it. I have also bought a second blanket. Happy anniversary.
-
Happy anniversary. You said you would learn to cook. I said I would learn to be patient. Neither happened. Still the best deal I ever made.
-
Twelve years, and you still think I do not know about the snack drawer in the garage. Happy anniversary, love.
What to leave out
-
"Forever and always."
It is on the front of the card already. The inside is for you.
-
"Words cannot express."
They can. You are holding a pen.
-
A list of every year.
One vivid moment beats a timeline.
-
Anything you would not say to their face.
A card is not the place to raise the thing you have been avoiding. That conversation deserves a table and two chairs.
-
Anything a stranger could have written.
If the line works for any couple, it is not done. Add the jukebox.
If you are still stuck
Answer these on a scrap of paper, then copy the answers into the card in that order.
-
1
Where were you the first time you knew?
The place, the weather, what they were wearing. Small is good.
-
2
What is one thing you only learned by living with them?
The thing nobody warned you about and you would not trade.
-
3
What ordinary thing do you want more of next year?
Not a trip. The Tuesday version of your life together.
That is the card. Sign it and stop.
When the card is not big enough
Some anniversaries carry more than four lines can hold. The twenty-five years. The year you nearly did not make it. The thing you have never said properly because there was never a right moment at the table. Say it anyway: Kumar and Epley (2018) found that people who put their appreciation into words consistently underestimate how much it means to the person who hears it.
That is where a song comes in. You type the story, the same one you would try to squeeze into the card, and it comes back as a song with their name in the chorus and your years in the verses. The average story people send us is around 90 words, roughly the inside of a big card. You read the lyrics first, hear a preview, and only pay if it sounds like the two of you.
The anniversary songs page has real songs husbands and wives made for each other, with the story they typed beside the lyrics it became. Play one, then decide whether this is a card year or a song year. Most people who do the song still write the card. The card says it; the song lets them hear it.
When four lines are not enough
Type the story you would have squeezed into the card. We write the lyrics, you hear a preview, and you only pay if it sounds like the two of you.
