The mom who has everything is rarely a woman with a full house. She is a woman who spent thirty years buying for other people and stopped keeping a list for herself. Ask what she wants and you get "nothing, just come for dinner". She means it, which is the problem and also the answer.
Two things follow. First, anything she could have bought, she either has or decided she did not need, so a new object has to clear a high bar. Second, the gifts that land with her are the ones that show you noticed: what she did, what she gave up, what she keeps saying she will do one day. The research on gift-giving backs this up.
