How Songfinch works

You pick an artist from a roster of about 1,166, tell them about the person, pay, and the artist writes and records a song. Standard delivery is seven days. If you want it faster you pay $25 for each day you shave off, up to $200 for next day.

Two things in their help centre are worth knowing before you order. First, payment comes before the song exists: "Once your artist has accepted your order, refunds and cancellations are not possible." You can read a lyric draft after paying, with 24 hours to respond, but if you chose a one, two or three day rush "your order skips the lyric draft step". Second, you do not own the result. In their words: "Any songs composed by our artists are 100% owned by them. We do not grant song ownership to anyone outside of the artist." The default licence is personal use only; putting it on Spotify or using it in a business costs extra.

Revisions are free for 72 hours after delivery. If you do nothing in that window "your song finalizes automatically and the free revision window closes", and later changes "aren't guaranteed". That policy was updated on 20 August 2026; older reviews describe a 48-hour window and paid fixes, which is why so many of the complaints below are about revision fees.

None of that is hidden. It is simply a different product: a commissioned recording by a working musician, with the trade-offs that come with commissioning anything.

How BeatJar works

You type the story: the name, the occasion, what they did, the thing you never quite say. We write the lyrics from it and play you the whole song, start to finish, before you pay anything. If a line is wrong, you change it. If the whole thing is wrong, you walk away and it costs nothing.

There is no artist to choose because there is no artist to book. What you are judging is the finished song, and you judge it before you spend a cent. The example above this section is a real one, with the story the customer typed next to the lyrics it became.

What Songfinch does better

A fair comparison says this plainly. Songfinch has a roster of real, named musicians, and you choose the one whose voice you want. For some gifts that is the whole point: the recipient is told a working artist wrote and sang a song about them, and that matters more than the money. Their positive reviews back it up; the most praised thing after production quality is the artist who "captured our story".

They also sell things BeatJar does not: a Spotify release, a commercial licence, an extra verse, a lyric video. They have been covered by Rolling Stone, People and Good Morning America, they have 23,605 reviews on Trustpilot, and they have delivered hundreds of thousands of songs. That is real trust, earned over years.

If you have a week, $200 or more, and you want the artist to be part of the gift, Songfinch is a good choice. Read the licence first.

Before you order from either

• Decide what you are buying. A commissioned recording by a named musician, or a finished song you have already heard. They are not the same product at different prices.
• Check the date. Songfinch needs seven days unless you pay per day. BeatJar delivers in the window you choose.
• Read the ownership line. At Songfinch the artist owns the song and you hold a personal-use licence. At BeatJar the MP3 is yours to keep and play.
• Know when you can still say no. At Songfinch, not after the artist accepts. At BeatJar, right up until you pay, which is after you have heard it.
