Their birthday, and you are on the other side of the world
A parcel is a week and a gamble. A call is twenty minutes. A song with their name in it is the whole day, in their pocket.

A song that crossed the distance, made from one phone call
Just Because · for a wife
A country song for the woman whose son set up the call
Country · Romantic · Male vocal
What they wrote: Her son Ryne set up a phone call one night we’ve been together 21 years since that phone call. She’s my rock, my heart and my soul and...
Story, lyrics and the songThe problem is not the distance. It is the timing
The birthdays that go wrong across a distance go wrong for one reason: the thing you sent arrives late, so the day itself has nothing in it. The fix is to separate the two. Send something that is guaranteed to land on the day, then let the parcel be a second gift whenever it turns up.
Digital gifts are not the consolation prize here. A letter they read at breakfast, a two-minute video from everyone who could not be there, a song with their name in it that they can play in the car, on the way to work, and again at night: these are the ones that fill a day. Chan and Mogilner (2017) found that the lived-through kind of gift does more for a relationship than the owned kind, and a birthday spent apart is exactly where that shows. Distance itself is not the barrier it feels like, either. Jiang and Hancock (2013) found that couples living far apart often open up more and feel as close, or closer, than couples in the same town, because they put more into the contact they do get.
What to send, in order of how well it travels
All of these arrive on time. Pick two.
-
1
A song with their name in it, sent at midnight their time
Type the story: who they are, what they did this year, the thing you always say to each other. Hear it before you pay. Send the link so it is the first thing they see. They will play it all day.
The song above this list was made across a distance from one phone call and a few sentences.
-
2
A video from everyone
Thirty seconds each from the people who cannot be there, stitched together. Ten minutes they will watch alone and then show everyone.
-
3
A letter, scanned or photographed
Handwritten, one page, one specific memory. Send the photo of it now; the paper can follow.
-
4
Breakfast or dinner, delivered where they are
Order from a place in their city to their door, timed for the meal. It is the closest thing to being at the table.
-
5
The call, with a plan
One story about them, one question about their year, one thing to press play on together. Then let them go enjoy the day.
Two hours before midnight their time is enough. Type the story, hear the song, send the link.
Read the lyrics and hear a preview before you pay
Timing it right
Work backwards from their morning, not yours.
- A song
- Ten minutes to type, a delivery window you choose
- Read the lyrics and hear it before paying; the shortest window is about an hour
- A video from everyone
- Two days to collect
- People are slow; ask three days early
- A meal delivered in their city
- Same day
- Order in their time zone, not yours
- A parcel across a border
- One to three weeks
- Send it anyway, as the second gift
What to avoid
-
Relying on the parcel
It will be late, and the day will be empty.
-
A call with no plan
"How is it going" three times is not a birthday.
-
Your time zone
A song at your midnight is their lunch break. Work out their morning and aim for it.
-
A gift card to a store they do not have
Check the country before you buy.
The song, specifically
Songs travel well because they do not need unwrapping, they fit in a pocket, and they get played more than once. Write down what you would say if you were at the table: how long you have known them, the thing they did this year, the joke only the two of you get. It comes back as a song in the music they play, with their name in the chorus. You read the lyrics, hear the whole song, change anything, and only pay if it sounds like them.
The birthday songs page has real ones, with the story typed next to the lyrics it became. Play one, then write yours before their midnight.
Be there at midnight their time
Type the story, read the lyrics, hear the song, and send the link before they wake up.
You read the lyrics and hear a preview before you pay.
